Marine from Ky. killed in Afghanistan

HONOLULU (AP) — One of three Marines killed in Afghanistan on Sunday was assigned to Marine Corps Base Hawaii, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

Lance Cpl. Timothy J. Poole, 22, of Bowling Green, Ky., was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force at Kaneohe Bay, the DOD said.

Poole’s unit deployed to Afghanistan in November and joined Regimental Combat Team 7 to conduct counterinsurgency operations with the Afghan National Security Forces.

Poole joined the Marine Corps in July 2007 and reported to Kaneohe that December. He previously deployed to Iraq in 2008 and 2009, returning to Hawaii in March 2009.

The other two Marines were identified as Sgt. Daniel M. Angus, 28, of Thonotosassa, Fla., and Lance Cpl. Zachary D. Smith, 19, of Hornell, N.Y.

Angus and Smith were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Lejeune, N.C., the DOD said

The three Marines died while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, the military said.
