Iran's VP Calls Military Build Up in Afghanistan Root Cause of Terrorism

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian First Vice-President Mohammad Reza Rahimi blasted the West's military approach towards terrorism in Afghanistan, saying that the ongoing crisis in the war-ravaged country would not be soothed through military solutions.

"Those who used war on terrorism as an excuse to launch an attack on Afghanistan have made no achievement but expanding terrorism," Rahimi told reporters on the sidelines of a summit of Afghanistan's neighboring states in Istanbul on Tuesday.

He further viewed assistance to the Afghan nation and aids to the country's reconstruction and prosperity as the best alternative to the present military approach towards the Afghan issue.

"The regional countries should help Afghanistan attain cultural, social and developmental prosperity and institutionalize security in the country," Rahimi stated.

He said Iran believes in "dialogue and coordination" since the approach could help the region fight against terrorism and attain growth and prosperity simultaneously.

The talks in Istanbul were attended by Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai, his counterparts from Pakistan and Turkey as well as senior officials from Iran, China, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Commenting on the upcoming conference on Afghanistan due to be held in London on January 28, Rahimi said, "The London conference cannot be a good prescription for soothing the pains and removing the problems of the Afghan people."

The conference will be co-hosted by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and co-chaired by the UK and Afghan Foreign Ministers and the UN.
