A suspected suicide bomber has killed at least 12 people in an attack on a checkpoint in north-west PakistanI, officials say.
A number of people were also injured when the bomber attacked the checkpoint in Khar, the main town in the troubled Bajaur tribal region.
Pakistani security forces have been battling militants in the Khar area.
Government officials said on Friday that at least 24 suspected militants had been killed in the fighting.
"It looks like a suicide attack," regional police official Fazl-e-Rabi told Reuters news agency after the checkpoint attack.
He added that at least seven of the dead appeared to have been passersby.
Initial reports suggested the attacker was in a vehicle. A local official later told AFP news agency the bomber had been wearing a suicide belt.
The army mounted a major offensive against Taliban militants in Bajaur in August 2008, ending in a truce early last year.
Close to the Afghan border, Bajaur has long been suspected of being the hiding-place of Osama Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and other top al-Qaeda leaders.

Seabee battalions to deploy to Afghanistan after holidays
Two battalions of Navy Seabees will deploy to Afghanistan in coming months as part of the 30,000 additional U.S. forces deploying to the region.
NMCB 133 from Gulfport and NMCB 4, based in Port Hueneme, Calif., will deploy in March.
Each battallion contains about 580 Seabees.
The buildup is part of the buildup of additional troops in support of the President Barack Obama’s strategy in Afghanistan. The Seabees’ mission is to help provide infrastructure such as bases, berthing facilities, roads and airfields for the increasing number of U.S. forces in country.
Although the deployment schedule is a March date, the battalions could leave as early as January. As part of their normal rotation cycle, NMCB 4 and NMCB 133 were originally scheduled for deployment in February. NMCB 133 was scheduled to go to Afghanistan, and NMCB 4 was originally scheduled to deploy to the Pacific Region.
“Since World War II, the Seabees have supported the Marine Corps in every major conflict. This is our legacy, and we are proud to be part of this important mission,“ said Rear Adm. Mark Handley, commander of the First Naval Construction Division, in a press release.

Bomb blast kills Afghan civilian, wounds 3
KABUL, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- An Afghan civilian was killed and three others sustained injuries as a bomb blast rocked Uruzgan's provincial capital Trinkot on Tuesday, deputy to provincial police chief Mohammad Musa said.
"The bomb planted on a hand-cart exploded in a bazaar this morning killing a passerby on the spot and wounding three others," Musa told Xinhua.
He blamed the enemies of peace, a term used against Taliban militants, for the blast, adding the enemies carried out the attack to disrupt peace in the province.
Conflicts and Taliban-linked insurgency have left over 1,500 civilians dead since early this year.
